Is Christmas Really About Christ?

Every year around this time, you can read all types of blogs, social media posts, articles and even watch so-called “documentaries” about what Christmas is really about. You’ll find a number of these commentaries giving information about the pagan roots of December 25th or other ancient winter solstice celebrations, and why Christians shouldn’t celebrate this holiday. While I’ll agree that many of the traditions that do indeed have their roots in paganism, are not in the best interest of a follower of Christ to practice (such as parties centered around drinking and other activities that are not becoming of a believer), I do believe that Christmas is indeed about Christ.  But, it’s up to us (Christians) to show the world what the true meaning of this time of year.

Without getting into a deep study of the history of pagan celebrations, or early church history, or even a timeline of the correct date of Jesus’ birth, we can look at one important fact.  The Bible makes a big deal out of the event of the birth of Jesus.  If you read the Biblical account of what we call the Christmas story in the gospels of Luke and Matthew, the story is a very important one.  Why?  We’ll, it’s not because God wanted us to celebrate His birthday every year like we do our own birthdays.  It’s really about the significance of how and why Jesus came into the earth the way He did.

In our Christmas Eve service this year, the focus of the program entitled “Miracle” was on the miraculous way that the person of Jesus was conceived in the virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20).  Jesus did not come from the seed of a man, and therefore was not born with a sin nature.  He had to come through a virgin, so there would be no dispute as to the fact that He was conceived supernaturally.  He was the only man (God-man) qualified to die for the sins of mankind, because He was without sin, and He was God Himself.  And He had to come into the earth as a man, because God gave mankind authority on the earth in Genesis 1:26.  Without the events of the birth of Jesus, the cross and the resurrection would not have been possible.  This perfect plan, which God already had in mind from the foundation of the world, was and is crucial to our belief.

So, why would we not celebrate the birth of our Savior?  Yes, we should do so every day of the year, but Christmas is a wonderful opportunity for us to proclaim this wonderful story – while the whole world is listening.  So, while we are spending time with family, eating our Christmas dinners, and opening our gifts, don’t forget what many Christians proclaim each year – “Keep Christ in Christmas”.  Remember, this is your opportunity to share the gospel with someone who has never really heard it, and to share this wonderful good news with our families.  We have been given a wonderful platform during this time of year, and the “Christmas story” is a great place to begin.

The Faith Process

If you been living for any significant period of time, you most likely have experienced some type of pain in your body.  And many of us, at some point, have taken some type of medication to alleviate the pain.  If you have, then you know how to work your faith!  Now, you may be asking yourself, “What do painkillers have to do with faith?”  Well, let’s take a look at the process, and you will see that there’s not really that much difference.

You have physical, tangible pain in your body, and you want it to go.  You have heard, either from a doctor, a friend or family member, or a commercial that a certain medication will get rid of your pain.  Based on what you have heard (because you trust the source of the information), you believe that the painkiller will work.  So you tell someone (or maybe you just tell yourself), “I’ve got a headache, but I’m going to take this medicine, and it will go away soon.”  After making your declaration, you take action by pouring a glass of water, placing the capsule or tablet in your mouth, and swallowing.  Not too long after taking the painkiller, your pain has been alleviated, and you go about your merry way.

If you think through this scenario, you used your faith in this situation.  Your faith was in the painkiller.  Well, really, your faith was in the word of the doctor, friend or commercial.   You had no “guarantee” that the medicine would work.  All you had was the word of the person who told you it would work.  You didn’t even have assurance that the pill you placed in your mouth was actually what you thought you were taking.  For all you know, it could have been a sugar pill.  But, you believed in your heart (mind), confessed with your mouth, and then acted on what you believed.  The result:  your pain went away.

The spiritual faith process is the same.  First you must hear a Word or a promise from God.  Unlike the doctor,  friend, or commercial, however, God’s Word is ALWAYS true.  Because you trust the Word of God, you believe what He has promised, whatever it may be:  healing, prosperity, deliverance, favor.  And because you believe God’s Word is true, you declare it with your mouth.  It may sound something like this, “1 Peter 2:24 says by Jesus stripes, I am healed.  So, pain, I command you to go in Jesus Name, so you must go now!.”  Then you act on what you have heard, believed, and confessed, by moving that body part or doing something you couldn’t do before.  Where many people get stuck in this process, is if pain doesn’t go away immediately.  Now, if you think about it, the painkiller didn’t take the pain away immediately either, but because your faith is so strong in the what you’ve heard about the medication, you keep believing in it, and you keep telling yourself that the pain will leave.  We must do the same thing with God’s Word.  Even if our healing, or prosperity, or whatever we are believing God for doesn’t manifest immediately, when we are in faith, we will continue to stand on God’s Word.   We must not allow unbelief to set in and change our confession.  Remember, God never lies, and His Word is always true.   Eventually, you will have what you believe you received – when you prayed.

The faith process is not a difficult process.  God is not trying to keep anything from us.  Jesus has already paid the price for you to receive whatever you need, so all the hard work has already been done.  In fact, Psalm 84:11 says, “. . . no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.”  Activate the faith process today, and pull those spiritual blessing into the natural today.  You CAN do it!

The Cure

THE CURE

2 Corinthians 5:17 [KJV] – Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old thigs are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Many people in this world have been touched in some way, either in their own life, or the life of a loved one by the horrible disease of cancer.  To the best of our knowledge, there is no earthly cure for this disease. But, I’m sure if someone discovered a natural cure for cancer, most of us would do everything we could to spread the word and give of our resources and time to make sure not one more person dies from this disease.

Well, there is another “disease” in this world that is much more destructive than cancer: SIN.  All the evil that is in this world is a direct result of sin.  Not just the individual sins we commit, but also the sin nature that is in every unbeliever.   Just like cancer, there is no natural “cure” for sin.  But, the Good News is, there is a supernatural cure, and His name is JESUS! The cure for a sin nature is that Jesus died on the cross and became sin for us, so that when we receive His sacrifice, we can become the righteousness of God in Him. In other words, Jesus took the punishment of death for us, so that we can exchange the old sin nature we were born with, for a new nature: the nature of Christ. The cure for the pull of sin after we have our new nature is understanding that even though our flesh is still drawn to sin, because we have the nature of Christ, and the Holy Spirit in us, we are no longer in bondage to sin. Romans 6:14 [KJV] says, “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” What this scripture is telling us is that, as Christians, we are no longer under the control of sin. We have dominion or authority over sin. We don’t have to go through life day to day being let by our emotions or fleshly desires, and then constantly feeling in bondage wondering if we have done something to anger God. Instead, we can now be led, not by the law, but by the Holy Spirit that lives in us. When we allow the Holy Spirit to direct our thoughts, and our decisions, we empower ourselves to overcome the flesh that is drawn to sin. We have The Cure!

But, now that we have The Cure, what should we do? Do we just keep the cure to ourselves, or do we share The Cure with everyone we can? As believers, it’s time for us to stop looking at all the evil in this world and talking about how bad things have gotten. We have the answers that the world is looking for. However, many of us have just sat on our hands and allowed fear and selfishness to keep us from spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ with the world.

But I believe, God is raising up a people who are not ashamed of the Gospel, because we understand it is the power of God unto salvation – it is The Cure!

Are you ready to join in and save as many lives as we can? Together, we can cover the whole earth with the glory of God and see the miraculous take place all over this world!

Salt & Light

SALT & LIGHT

[Mat 5:13-14 KJV]  Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Salt and light: these are two things that we would not normally use together in a sentence.  They seem like things that are not really related to each other, but in the book of Matthew, Jesus refers to believers as SALT and LIGHT.  So what is the purpose of salt and light?  If we look closely, we will notice that the function of these two is quite similar.  Salt is a preservative, and it makes food that is not flavorful to our flesh more desirable.  But the only way for salt to work is for it to penetrate the item it is applied to.  It must also remain pure in order to have the desired effect.  Similarly, light works by penetrating into darkness.  If a light is filtered or dim, the effect on darkness is diminished.

As Christians, we have a responsibility to penetrate the world and the darkness in it by telling others about the gospel; the good news of the Grace that has been given to us by Jesus!  But this becomes difficult if our Christian walk is polluted or if our light is diminished.  As believers, we must begin to depend on the Grace of God and the Power of the Holy Spirit to help us live lives that are an example to those we encounter on a daily basis.  We are called to BE a witness through our lifestyle, and not just our words (or our “profession” to be a Christian).  This doesn’t mean that we will be perfect; only Jesus is perfect.  But as believers, we must remember that Jesus, through His Holy Spirit, lives in us.  That means our spirit is perfect!  And if we let Jesus shine through us; if we let the Holy Spirit minister to others through us, we can effectively penetrate this world and bring others to Christ!

So how do we accomplish this task?  We must get our focus off of our own needs and circumstances only.  Our focus must be God’s agenda, not our own.  Matthew 6:33 [KJV] says, “ But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”  We don’t have to worry about or focus our needs.  God is telling us that if we focus on His Kingdom, His plan, and His agenda, everything we need will be added on to us.

So today, let’s let our focus be on what we can do to be salt and light in the darkness of the world around us.  If there is enough light shining, we will be a city that cannot be hid.  And the world will not be able to resist it!

. . . And Believe in Your Heart

Believe in Your Heart

“that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”             Romans 10:9 NKJV

If you’ve come to Living Word Church for a while (or maybe even just once), you may have recognized that we do a LOT of confessions of the Word of God.  We confess at the beginning of service.   We confess over our tithes and offerings.  We make confessions before Pastor begins ministering.  And when someone responds to the invitation, we confess at the end of service.  So, needless to say, confession is a big part of what we believe as a ministry.  You may have wondered why we confess so much.  No, we are not a religious cult :-).  Confession is a Biblical principle that is introduced into the life of the believer from the moment of salvation. The Bible tells us in Romans 10:9,

“that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

As we learned in last week’s Lifeline, part of the process of faith is speaking.  If you believe something, you demonstrate your faith by speaking and acting out on what you believe.  But have you ever felt like your confessions are meaningless or unfruitful?  Do you feel like you confess, and confess, and confess, and nothing ever happens?  If this describes you, you are missing a KEY component in the faith process and in understanding the confession of God’s Word.  If you look at the principle outlined in Romans 10:9, it clearly tells us

IF you confess with your mouth . . . AND BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART

. . . .   Believing what you confess is CRITICAL!  If you do not believe what you are saying, it is just words, or wishful or hopeful thinking.  Hope is very important, and Faith and Hope are powerful when they work together, but they are NOT the same thing.  Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  Faith gives substance to and is the confidence of what we hope for.  But hope, by itself is not enough.  You must believe your confession in order for it to manifest in your life.
Now, if you are not yet in faith (in other words, you don’t yet believe what you are saying), DON’T STOP CONFESSING!  Romans 10:17 KJV says “So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.  When you confess the Word of God, you are hearing the Word of God.  The more you hear, the more you will believe. And when you believe AND speak, you will activate the supernatural power of God in your life.  So, KEEP CONFESSING God’s Word – EVERYDAY!

The Deep Things of God

The Deep Things of God

The Deep Things of God

[1Co 2:9-10 KJV] 9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed [them] unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

I don’t know of too many people in this world that don’t want to know what the future holds for their life.  The unfortunate reality for a lot of people who call themselves Christians is that when it comes to knowing what is to come, we too many times believe that only a “super spiritual” person can know those types of things.  Some people even make the mistake of turning to the evil supernatural world and seeking out a psychic or “spiritual reader” to find out what their future holds.   But any future and any plan that comes from any source but God, is not a good plan.

The Bible says is Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT),

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”  The King James Version says God has an “expected end” for your life.  God’s plan for your life is good, and He wants you to know what lies ahead.  But, we must understand that what God has in store for us cannot be accessed through our physical senses (sight, taste, touch, smell, and feeling).  I Corinthians 2:9 – 10 tells us that eyes have not seen and ears have not heard, neither has it entered in to the heart of man(mind/thinking), things which God has prepared for them that love Him.  We often look at this text and rejoice in the fact that God has something good prepared for us.  But what God is really showing us through this text is that God wants to reveal His plan for our lives to us, but this plan can only be accessed by His Spirit

(verse 10).  And He doesn’t only want us to know the “big” things; He wants us to know all things.
The Holy Spirit knows ALL things and will reveal God’s plan to you.  (John 14:2)  But, you must have a personal relationship with Him in order to clearly hear and know His voice.  Just like our close friends and relatives, we can only develop an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit by spending quality time in God’s Word, meditating, listening and confessing His Word on a consistent basis. It’s time for the body of Christ to show the world that we have the answers that they are so desperately looking for.  But we must first come to know them for ourselves by walking in the Spirit, and not being led by our physical senses.  Get to know the Deep Things of God TODAY!

A Lifestyle of Faith

A Lifestyle of Faith

A Lifestyle of Faith

[Rom 1:17 KJV] 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Spare tires, life preservers, fire extinguishers, and a weapon:  these are all items that we think about having around in case of an emergency.  We don’t use them every day, but we make sure we have them readily available to us “just in case”.  Having these items around gives us a sort of “peace of mind” because we know they are always there when we need them.  But, do we treat our faith in God like one of these “in case of emergency” items?  The unfortunate reality is many Christians do exactly this.

Romans 1:17 tells us that “the just shall LIVE by faith.”  This means that faith is something that we should be walking in

all the time; it should be a lifestyle, not something we pull out when an emergency arises.  When we gave our life to Jesus, we must realize that we moved our residency from a worldly system into the Kingdom of God.  We should no longer operate like everyone else; we must live our lives according to God’s way of doing things, which is by Faith.  Every day of our lives, we should be practicing walking out the life of faith, not just “saving it” for the big stuff.  It takes faith to wake up with a positive expectation of God’s favor every day.  It takes faith to walk in the love and peace of God with our family and co-workers or classmates.  It takes faith to trust God for protection daily as we travel to school, work, or in our daily activities.  But, so often, we set our faith in God’s Word and His promises aside and just let life take us wherever it

wants to.
We like knowing that it’s there when we need it, but we don’t really use it.  But faith is not a spare tire; it’s a lifestyle.  And if we don’t practice faith on a daily basis, when an emergency situation arises, oftentimes we have not built our faith up in order to receive the desired results.  Think of faith like a muscle instead of a fire extinguisher.  You must exercise your faith muscles every day if you want to be strong in the midst of adversity.  So, pull that Bible and those teaching CD’s off the shelf.  Begin to read and listen to God’s Word every day, and then put into practice what you have heard – every day.  Don’t let life tell you what your experience will be.  Instead, Experience LIFE God’s way:  by Faith!

No Other Options

No Other Options

Have you ever been in a situation where you thought you were in faith, but you realized later on that you really were not?  Sometimes is can seem difficult to really know whether or not you are in a place of faith, hope, or possibly even unbelief.  But there’s one test that will always give you an indication of where you are: the No Other Options test.

So, what is the “No Other Options” test?  Let’s use an illustration.  It’s springtime, and you know that the pollen count is going to be high.  You have in the past dealt with seasonal allergies, and they have become so bad that often times it is difficult to function because of sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes.  You make a decision, that you have had enough of dealing with allergies, and you are going to use your faith to believe God for your healing.  So, you wake up, have your quiet time with God, get dressed and head to work.  Immediately, the symptoms hit you.  Your eyes are so watery that you can hardly see to drive.  Then, you remember that you have made a decision to believe God to be healed from seasonal allergies.  So, you begin to speak the word of God that you are healed by Jesus stripes to combat the symptoms.  As you are confessing, you see a CVS Pharmacy coming up.  The thought comes to mind, “Maybe you should stop by and get some medication just in case this confessing doesn’t work.”  So, you pull over and run into the store, grab a pack of medicine, get back in your car and continue making your confessions.  You confess for several hours, and the symptoms never go away.  So finally, you make a decision to go ahead and take the allergy medicine to get some relief.  But, in the back of your mind, you can’t seem to figure out why your “faith” didn’t seem to work.

Do you see what the “No Other Options” test is?  Many times we think the act of quoting scriptures or even praying automatically means that you are in faith.  But, if we’re really honest, in our minds we don’t believe the words are confession, because we already have an option set-up for “if” our “faith” doesn’t work.  We must believe we receive – WHEN WE PRAY.  If you truly believe, there are no other options, because what God’s Word says is the ONLY truth.  Don’t let symptoms tell you what the Truth is.  Don’t doubt, only believe.

PLEASE NOTE:  There is nothing wrong with taking medicine, and it does not mean that you do not have faith if you take it.  So PLEASE DO NOT STOP taking your medicine, especially if you have a life-threatening condition.  You don’t prove that you are in faith by not taking your medicine; you stop taking your medicine because you KNOW you know longer need it.  If your faith has not reached that level yet, keep taking your medicine until you have assurance in YOUR spirit, that you no longer need it.  This assurance can ONLY come from the Holy Spirit; not from another person.  So, if you still need medicine, continue to build up your faith by reading and hearing, and declaring God’s Word .  Begin to use your faith in smaller areas first.  Again, when you’re

ready to put your faith on the “Big Stuff”, you’ll know it, and there will be NO OTHER OPTIONS.

Yes, No or Maybe?

Yes, No or Maybe

Many people feel that when they don’t receive the answer they desire to prayer, that it is because sometimes God says “Yes”, sometimes He says “No”, and sometimes He says “Maybe”. But, the truth is that scripture does not back this up.  The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 1:20 (KJV), “For all the promises of God in him [are] yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”  Every promise God has given to His people has already been provided for us, and God’s answer is “Yes!”

“So why didn’t my prayer get answered?” you may be saying.  The true issue is not God’s answer, it is our prayer. If we do not receive from God, it is usually due to 2 major issues in our prayers. The first issue people often have is wrong motive (or selfish prayers that are not consistent with a Godly life). James 4:3 (KJV) states, “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume [it] upon your lusts.”   This doesn’t mean that God doesn’t want our desires granted, but they must be in accordance to His will, and our focus should be His Kingdom and His righteousness first.

The 2nd issue is not praying according to God’s Word. 1 John 5:14 – 15 (KJV) says, “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”  In other words, God is assuring us that as long as we are praying according to His Word, the answer is a resounding “YES!”

So ask yourself today, “Am I praying the Word of God?”  “Is my prayer only for my benefit?”  If the answer is yes, then believe you have received it, and expect the manifestation, because it’s already done!

Faith Works by Love

Faith Works by Love

Have you ever prayed about something and felt like you were doing everything right, but you still didn’t see any results?  You tithe, give offerings, work diligently in the church; you follow all the “rules”, yet it seems like God is not answering your prayers.  “What is the problem God?” you ask.  Well, rest assured, God is NOT the problem.

The first thing you must understand is that God has already provided everything you will ever need.  Whether it’s healing, financial increase, or salvation for a loved one, Jesus paid for all of it over 2000 years ago on the cross.  Just before He died on the cross, he spoke 3 very important words: “It is FINISHED (John 19:30 KJV)”.

Jesus has already done all the work.  Our job is to believe in His finished work and receive it by faith.

So what’s the problem? Galatians 5:6 tells us that it’s not following the “rules” that causes our faith to work; “. . .but faith which worketh by LOVE.”  The only way we can receive from God is by faith, and the only way our faith will work, is that we understand and walk in God’s LOVE.  When we understand how much God loves us, trusting Him becomes much easier.  And when we show that same LOVE to others, our faith is energized and begins to produce results.  So, the next time you need to see a breakthrough in your life, instead of asking God what the problem is, try checking your love walk.
